Thanksgiving

Had a terrific Thanksgiving this year. Matt, Agnus & Camille came into the city and we had a great feast [sans turkey]. Brendan didn't want to be stuck inside watching a bird bake, so instead we opted for roasted duck and savory BBQ pork in Chinatown. It was so great! We made some traditional side dishes to accompany our 'asian turkey' (cranberry sauce, green beans, mashed potatoes, etc.) so it wasn't completely a Christmas Story dinner, but pretty darn close. The next day we avoided Black Friday madness and hit the ice skating rink at Bryant Park. A few pics below and I'll have more soon as I get them off my camera... more to come and thankful to have such loving friends and family.. we miss you all!

New Museum action and John Varvatos/CBGB

OMFUG!

Hell's Bells it's Sunday already

G'morning! It's Sunday, so time for a little week in review. Photos from our adventures below. In short: Went to an AC/DC concert at Madison Square Garden on Wed night (compliments of my Sony contact at work, thx Ryan!) I'm pretty sure we saw 70% of Jersey that night but good times none the less and lots of devil horns and fist thumping... then we hit the New Museum yesterday and saw Elizabeth Peyton's exhibit which was reminiscent of my adolescence and college days. Loads of oil paintings of cultural icons like Queen Elizabeth, but mostly pop cultural stuff like Liam G. of Oasis, Jarvis Cocker, Sid Vicious, etc etc and of course Kurt Cobain. We can't see to get away from Seattle I guess. It was a nice feeling. We also saw a really interesting video projection that was soundtracked by Seattle noise rock group Kinski. Pretty neat stuff. And to add to all the rockness, we went further into the Bowery to find that the old CBGBs venue had been turned into an upscale clothing boutique. What once was a piss stained venue where Blondie and the Ramones hung out at, is now a sleek John Varvatos store. But don't get upset so fast, John Varvatos used to dress Iggy Pop and the concept of the store is totally inspired by the venue. All rock n roll. Some of the orig. venue posters still hang, and they sell old records to boot. Framed photographs of Blondie and the Ramones hang the walls so in a way, it's like a CBGBs museum. Just with some very expensive clothes !

Next up: William Eggleston photo exhibit at the Whitney. I'm hoping that we'll see this next weekend or over Thanksgiving... keep u posted.

Inspiration

If you haven't seen this yet, definitely make a point to check it out sometime. It's a really amazing documentary about this crazy French man who decides one day that he wants to walk a tight rope between the Twin Towers, and goes and does it. Just like that! Obviously there was months of preparation and strategizing involved (they had to break into the WTC and dodge security) but the end result is what makes it all the worth. It really spoke to me, in that you can pretty much do whatever you dream of - even if it's walking a tight rope hundreds of stories high. It was incredibly inspiring and if you need a lift, this is the film you need to see.

Last week

It's been a few days since Tuesday, probably the most climatic day of the year, and yet the election results remain at the fore front of everyones' mind. It felt as if New Years had come a couple months earlier because people are still reeling in excitement from Obama's victory. His pictures were plastered on every newspaper I encountered on Wednesday morning. Daily News, New York Post, AM NY, NY Times, you name it, Obama Mania was in full effect. You can still buy the campaign pins on the corner of 34th Street. Maybe I'll get one as a keepsake?

So things have been great this past week and we're moving forward. Brendan scored a job (yay! more details coming soon...) I'm getting used to the early morning commutes on the subway and work has been keeping me extremely busy, but I am learning a lot. (side note: I got my Sony ID badge on Friday since I have weekly meetings with their digital marketing folks, this means discount at the Sony store... electronic junkies - let me know if you want anything, I just might be able to score you a deal!) Brendan and I have also made some time to do a little exploring in the city. We discovered Korea Town, which is just a couple blocks away from where I work. It's like a little slice of Seoul right in the midst of the city. I'll throw some pictures up later this weekend.. for now, we will be off to SOHO to meet a friend for a late brunch... stay tuned for updates later on....

OBAMAMANIA!

History has been made, our first African American has been elected to office as President of the United States! Firecrackers are going off in my neighborhood, drivers are honking their horns like crazy, and there was a woman above us that just screamed at the top of her lungs when it was announced that Barack had won. The energy here is truly amazing. I can't wait to see the headlines in the morning. This is a really exciting moment in history. Wish I stayed at the Bell Tower bar a bit longer to celebrate, but the view from my cozy living room couch is just as good...

Marathon Sunday

Watching them go down 4th ave in Brooklyn...

Greetings! Today was another beautiful Fall day in the city. A sunny but chilly 40-something degrees outside is what we experienced while watching the New York City Marathon. Our pal Kristen was running the 26 mile race and placed in the top 10,000 - clocking in at an impressive 3 hours and 49 minutes. Better than I could ever do! B and I had a lot of fun watching the big race from 4th Ave in Brooklyn. All the streets were closed off and there was a never ending sea of runners and gatorade cups covering the streets. It was the most inspiring thing I've seen in a long while. So inspiring that I ended up jogging this afternoon for a whole 25 minutes! Yeah, might need a little work on my endurance but maybe I'll be able to run a 5K some day?
